Suparsha Cave in Udupi

The Suparsha cave is located near Kamalashile; at a distance of 35kms from Kundapura in Udupi district. The cave is surround ed by mountains and evergreen forests. The river Kubja flows alongside the cave. The Suparsha cave is near to the famous Sri Brahmi Durgaparameshwari temple. It is said that the cave was named after the King Suparsha and the cave is the point of convergence of three devis; Saraswathi, Lakshmi and Kali.

History of Suparsha Cave

In Krutha Yuga, King Suparsha searched a new place in order to perform the penance and get Moksha from his sins. He came towards this cave and found the cave suitable for his meditation. This is the reason why the cave got the name ‘Suparsha Cave’; named after the king.

King Suparsha offered numerous prayers to the Lord Shiva in order to make him give moksha for his sins without any hurdles. God Shiva appointed one of his Ganas called ‘Bhairava’ to keep a strict watch near the cave so that king’s meditation is not disturbed. It’s also said that many Maharishis and Rajas came to the cave for meditating to attain Moksha and one among the famous rishis was Sri Sridhara Swamiji of Varadapura. This cave is about 2 kms from the temple on the road of Halli Holle. There is an idol of Bhairava SwamI and own towards the cave there are three Lingas which are known as ‘Tri-Shakti Linga’. It is a fusion of three Goddess Saraswathi, Lakshmi and Kali.

It is the right side of the cave where King Suparsha, Sri Sridhara Swami and Adhi Sesha performed their meditation for months and years. Down towards the cave is origin of Naga Theertha flows downhill through rocks to join the river Kubja. Next to the temple there is another cave which known as the Naga Sannidi. It has a big dome and is home to bats. Long ago, Adishesha and Garuda came to Goddess Brahmi Durga Parameshwari for seeking Moksha from a curse of the Lord Shiva. According to the mythology, a tiger once come near the cave to rest and lighted a fire to keep itself warm.

You can easily reach the cave from the nearest airport and railway station.

Mangalore – 125 kms.

Nearest Railway Stations:
Kundapura – 35 kms.
Mangalore – 125 kms
Shimoga – 120 kms.

Roads: It is well-connected with roads. Frequent buses run for Kamalashile.
